What Is BMI?

When BMI Can Be Misleading

BMI is most useful when you fall near the middle of a category and have average muscle mass. It becomes less useful in several situations.

A muscular person can have a BMI in the overweight or obese range while carrying relatively low body fat. This is not rare. Athletes in strength sports and people who train consistently can land in that category without having excess fat. BMI was not designed for them.
